Exhibition at Peover Hall Church Commemorates 80th Anniversary of General Patton’s Death

An exhibition commemorating the 80th anniversary of U.S. General George S. Patton’s death is set to open at St Lawrence’s Church, Peover Hall, on Saturday 7th June.

Curated from the Peover Hall archives and Patton’s personal diaries, the exhibition offers a rare and moving insight into one of the most iconic military leaders of the 20th century.

The display focuses on Patton’s time at Peover Hall which served as the headquarters for the U.S. Third Army in early 1944, as troops prepared for the D-Day landings. The material explores Patton’s philosophy on life and war, his reflections in the lead-up to the Normandy invasion and his unique leadership style that inspired soldiers and stirred controversy alike.

Born in California in 1885, General Patton was renowned for his bold tactics, colourful personality and often expletive-laced pre-battle speeches. His time at Peover left a lasting impression on the local area and marked a critical chapter in the Allied war effort.

The General Patton Exhibition opens on Saturday 7th June to coincide with the National Garden Scheme Open Weekend at Peover Hall and will continue throughout the summer, with public viewings available every Tuesday and Thursday. Entry to the exhibition is free, although donations to St Lawrence’s Church are always welcome.

Visitors are encouraged to make the most of their trip by exploring Peover Hall’s celebrated gardens, open as part of the NGS weekend with an entry fee of £7. For those looking to further enrich their visit, guided tours of the Elizabethan Hall are available for £15, offering a rare chance to uncover the Hall’s rich history and hidden stories, including exclusive insights from current owner Henry Brooks.

Proceeds from the NGS weekend help support vital charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, and The Queen’s Nursing Institute – making your visit not only a step into history but also a contribution to meaningful causes.

This summer exhibition offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Patton’s legacy in a place where history was made.
