Thousands of people gathered at the Ashley Hall Showground in Cheshire to take part in the North West’s first Rough Runner race held on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October 2015.
The distance running obstacle course, inspired by TV shows such as Gladiator, Total Wipeout and Takeshi’s Castle, attracted over 4,000 runners and hundreds of supporters to the 50 acre Showground owned by Marsh Farm Partnership, part of Tatton Estate located on the border of Manchester and Cheshire.
Participants encountered a series of unique obstacles as they attempted to complete the course including the ‘Cargo Corkscrew’, the ‘Fearless Fall’ and ‘The Travelator’.
Thorfinn Armstrong, Co-founder of Rough Runner said; “We’re delighted the North West’s first Rough Runner challenge was so successful. The Ashley Showground was the perfect location for the event, providing easy access for people from across the North West. We look forward to bringing our unique obstacle course back to the Ashley Showground in 2016”
The event was a lift for local businesses from across Cheshire and further afield with the Crepe Chateau, Inflatable Pub Company, Mio’s Pizzas, Chelford Mobile Services and Healthbox Kitchen all trading at the event.
Toni, owner of Crepe Chateau, a small business selling freshly made sweet and savory crepes along with specialty coffee said; “It’s great Rough Runner has attracted so many people to the Ashley Showground, not only is it a fitness boost for those taking part but it’s a welcome boost to the local economy.”

Rough Runner is one of the unique and fun events which adds to Cheshire East’s thriving tourist industry.”
A team of 10 from Tatton Estate Management took part with Karen Vicars and Alison Witt beating the men in the team with a time of 1 hour and 40 minutes for the 10k race. Karen and Alison said: “The mix of terrain at Ashley Showground makes it a great challenge; we had a brilliant day and we’re delighted to have beaten the boys in our team – we will definitely be back next year!”
Heather Clawson of Tatton Estate Management, said: “Rough Runner was a great launch event for the Ashley Showground. The 50 acre grass showground close to the M6 and M56, walking distance from Ashley train station, makes it the ideal location for events like Rough Runner. We’re delighted we could add to Cheshire East’s growing visitor economy by hosting the North West’s first Rough Runner event and we look forward to making next year’s event even better.”
